Celebrating Adult B'nei Mitzvah
Marking the Moment
A large congregation wanted to create a program that would elevate the process and moment of becoming an adult b’nei mitzvah (plural version of bar/bat mitzvah, a coming of age ceremony). This was a cohort learning experience where we began with an opening Havdalah (ritual to mark the transition between the Sabbath and the rest of the week) during which we discussed what it meant to transition into a new phase of their Jewish journey together. We created an experience where this group engaged in weekly learning about conceptual frameworks of prayer and gained literacy and confidence about the prayer service they would ultimately lead. They met with congregational clergy to help them write their divrei torah (inspiring words about the Torah portion). After doing a tour of the mikveh (ritual bath), each participant decided to immerse themselves within a week of their ceremony which took place on Shavuot (holiday marking our receiving of Torah) The highlight was when the rabbi wrapped the group in a tallit they had purchased for the congregation for a special blessing after they had each read out of the Holocaust-surviving Torah Scroll that was rescued from Belarus.
