Marking A Meaningful Merger
Marking the Moment
Two synagogues in the final stage of a merger decided to work towards marking the final chapter of this transition in a memorable way. We began with an opening ritual during Rosh Hashanah. We met at a local river and performed Tashlich (a ceremony representing letting go of negative parts of our past), where we released into the living waters attributes of the former congregations that they had needed to let go of in order to move toward a new vision together. We studied holiday texts about teshuvah (turning away from our negative qualities and towards our best selves) and applied this to our communal process of turning toward our shared values. Throughout the year, the Executive Committee met monthly for a structured process of learning Mussar (Jewish Spiritual Ethics) where each person took on different spiritual practices to become their best selves. We concluded the year with a Simchat Torah ritual open to all members of the new congregation where we presented the community with a communal ketubah (a covenant document traditionally used at weddings) outlining the shared vision for this newly formed synagogue. We concluded by passing around the Torah, with each member offering a blessing as we moved forward together.
